Fougeron’s pictures of Adrien and Nicolas sleeping or lounging about in Greenwich Village and the South of France have a lovely looseness and spontaneity, but they never feel like snapshots. Color energizes the work and adds to its sensual undertow.

T Magazine, The New York Times: A Mom Turns Her Sons Awkward Adolescence Into Art

Beginning Friday, the art gallery on the fourth floor of the Hermès flagship store on Madison Avenue in Manhattan will be filled with 23 photographs by the Parisian-born, New York-based artist Martine Fougeron. The images belong to “Teen Tribe”... “It is the story of six years of our life unfolding, as well as folding,” said Fougeron, whose sons Adrien, now 21, and Nicolas, now 22, served as both the inspiration and subjects.

Her color portraits often contain contrasting qualities. They are carefully lit and composed but they are also lively and of the moment. Fougeron says that she thinks of color and shape first, lighting the images cinematically. She cites Vermeer’s paintings of domestic life as well as Larry Sultan’s photographs of his parents as inspirations, and she is fond of quoting Matisse: “But isn’t love at the origin of all creation?” Her love for her sons is the underlying thread connecting all of these fine psychological portraits.
